Decorating Is Mostly Preparation
Filling, sanding, dusting down, masking, priming — that's where the result is decided. The actual painting is the easy bit. A proper decorator spends two days prepping a room and one day applying paint, not the other way round.
We work that way every time. It's why our finishes hold up — and it's why our cut-in lines around skirting and window frames are sharp enough to look at closely.
Paint Quality Matters More Than Colour
There's a real difference between a £20 trade emulsion and a £50 designer-brand paint — coverage, opacity, washability, and how they age. We'll talk you through what's worth paying for and what isn't, depending on the room and how it's used.
For walls in high-traffic areas (hallways, kids' bedrooms, kitchens) we recommend a washable matt or scuff-resistant finish. For woodwork, eggshell or satinwood — both far more durable than a basic gloss.
Painting New Plaster — Mist Coat First
Fresh plaster needs a watered-down emulsion (a 'mist coat') applied as the first coat so the paint can soak in and bond. Skip this step and the next two coats will eventually peel off. We get this right every time.
The Process
The Decorating Process Done Properly
- 01
Walkthrough & Quote
We look at every room, assess prep work needed, agree colours and finishes, and quote per room.
- 02
Protect & Mask
Floors covered, furniture moved or sheeted, sockets, switches and skirting taped.
- 03
Fill & Sand
Cracks, holes, nail heads filled and sanded smooth. Existing high-gloss surfaces keyed for adhesion.
- 04
Prime
Bare plaster mist-coated, woodwork primed, stain blockers used where needed.
- 05
Cut In
Edges around ceilings, skirting, window frames and sockets cut in by brush — sharp and clean.
- 06
Roll Walls & Brush Woodwork
Two finish coats on walls; two coats on woodwork with a sand between coats.
- 07
Snag & Clean Up
Touch-ups, masking removed, floors hoovered, room left tidier than we found it.
